Itchy and Scratchy (Beta) was an unreleased game for the Sega Genesis, developed by BlueSky Software and intended for publication by Acclaim Entertainment. It exists as a prototype from the mid-90s, a period when licensed platformers and beat 'em ups were common, often attempting to capture the spirit of popular cartoons.
You control either Itchy or Scratchy, moving through side-scrolling stages based on their violent cartoon shorts. The main objective is simply to progress from left to right, defeating waves of enemy mice or cats using an arsenal of exaggerated weapons like mallets, bombs, and buzzsaws. The gameplay involves constant, frantic combat with very little exploration or puzzle solving, and the difficulty can feel unbalanced, with cheap enemy placements and awkward hit detection. It feels like controlling a barely contained, glitchy cartoon riot.
