Play Janou Touryuumon (Japan) Online
You wander a colorful pixel world recruiting oddball party members through random encounters—like dueling a stranger or finding someone’s lost pet—then figure out which weirdos actually fight well together. The turn-based battles feel snappy, especially when your samurai starts countering everything.

Janou Touryuumon is one of those Genesis RPGs that slipped through the cracks outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weird, endearing energy. You start off in a bright, chunky pixel world where everyone talks in that exaggerated old-school JRPG way—lots of exclamation points and dramatic pauses. The battles are turn-based but faster than you’d expect, with these little animations that make even basic attacks feel punchy.
What got me was the party system. You recruit characters in the weirdest ways—one joins because you help them find their lost pet, another just challenges you to a duel out of nowhere. Half the fun is figuring out who actually works well together. (Pro tip: The samurai’s counterattack is stupidly good once you level him up.)
It’s not perfect—some of the dungeon layouts are confusing, and the translation patches floating around can be… creative. But there’s something about the way it mixes classic RPG tropes with Sega’s offbeat style that makes it stick in your head. If you’ve ever wanted to play a lost ’90s JRPG that feels like it was made by people who loved EarthBound as much as Phantasy Star, track this one down.
