Kid Dracula came out on the Game Boy in 1990 from Konami, a time when portable games were often simpler, scaled-down versions of console titles. It stands out from that crowd by being its own strange, silly thing, a spin-off from the Castlevania series that trades gothic horror for cartoonish charm.
You control the young vampire lord himself, moving screen by screen through themed stages to reclaim your castle. Your main weapon is a forward-firing magic shot, but the real fun comes from transformations; you can turn into a bat for better flight or shrink into a tiny, invulnerable form to slip through tight spaces. The pacing is brisk, the platforming is solid, and the enemy designs are consistently weird and funny. It feels like playing through a Saturday morning cartoon where you just happen to be the son of Dracula.
