Game Overview

King of the Zoo is a Game Boy game released in 1990, developed by Kotobuki System and published by Irem. It arrived during a period when the handheld was filling up with quirky, experimental titles, and this one fits right into that mold with its unusual premise and frantic energy.

You play as a zookeeper tasked with managing a park that's falling apart at the seams. Your main goal is to keep all the animals contained and happy, which means feeding them, repairing broken fences, and chasing down escapees before they cause too much trouble. The screen scrolls as you move through the zoo, and you have to juggle multiple tasks at once; penguins slip through gaps, monkeys climb out of enclosures, and elephants trumpet if they go too long without a snack. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as more animals break loose. It feels like a constant, delightful scramble just to keep things from falling completely apart.
