I picked up Kunio Kun Nekketsu Collection 2 for the Game Boy Advance back in 2007, a release from Million that bundled a couple of classic titles from the series. It was a time when these kinds of retro compilations felt like a nice nod to the past, especially on a handheld that was still getting plenty of use. The package includes Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, two games that originally came out in the late 80s but found a second life here.

You control Kunio and his friends, running through urban streets or across sports fields, punching and kicking anyone who gets in your way. The main goal shifts depending on the game; in the dodgeball title, you're trying to win matches by any means necessary, while the brawler has you fighting through waves of delinquents to rescue a friend. Signature mechanics include the ability to pick up weapons like bats and trash cans, executing special moves with precise button combinations, and navigating screen by screen through enemy territory. The pacing is fast and often chaotic, with a difficulty that can feel unforgiving by modern standards. It feels rough and immediate, like you're really scrapping in a schoolyard.
