I picked up Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, published by Activision. It was one of those licensed games that came out alongside the movie, and on the GBA it fit right in with the platform's mix of side-scrollers and puzzle adventures. The game doesn't try to reinvent anything, but it does a solid job of translating the books' dreary, off-kilter tone into something playable.
You switch between the three Baudelaire orphans, using Violet's inventions to solve environmental puzzles, Klaus's research to decode messages, and Sunny's teeth to chew through obstacles. The main goal is to evade Count Olaf and his troupe by navigating through locations like the mansion and the lumber mill, screen by screen. You spend a lot of time avoiding enemies, combining items, and tapping through text with that dry, pessimistic narration always hanging over you. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes a little slow, and the controls can feel stiff, especially during platforming sections. Still, moving through each gloomy chapter makes you feel like you're surviving one miserable situation after another, just like in the books.
