Lightening Force came out for the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Technosoft. It was part of that wave of shooters that really pushed the hardware, with detailed sprites and a soundtrack that felt huge for the time. The game is actually the fourth entry in the Thunder Force series, though it was just called Lightening Force here.
You pilot a ship through horizontally and vertically scrolling stages, switching between four primary weapons on the fly to handle different enemy formations. Your main goal is survival, clearing each area to face off against massive, multi-part bosses that demand constant movement and quick weapon changes. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is substantial, especially in the later levels where enemy fire saturates the screen. It feels like a constant, high-speed negotiation between your reflexes and the chaos unfolding around you.
