Madden NFL 96 on the Genesis is one of those games that just feels like football. You’ve got all the 1995 teams, plus those classic "All Madden" squads if you want to mix things up. Exhibition games are quick and satisfying, but I always end up diving into a full season—there’s something about building a team over time that hooks me.
The new voice clips are hilariously rough by today’s standards, but back then, hearing Madden himself bark out "BOOM!" after a big hit was pure magic. Drafting and creating players adds a weirdly addictive layer—I spent way too much time trying to make a superstar QB who’d actually get picked. (Spoiler: mine didn’t.)
Oh, and the strategy menus? Surprisingly deep. You can tweask everything from defensive formations to how often your QB audibles, and the team match-up screen is low-key genius for spotting weak spots in your lineup. Just don’t get too attached to your running back—those 100+ injury types mean he’s one bad tackle away from the bench.
