Masakari Densetsu Kintarou RPG came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Irem. It's one of those action RPGs that feels very much of its time, built for quick sessions but with enough depth to keep you coming back. The game draws from the Kintarō folk tales, placing you in a world filled with mythological creatures and traditional settings.
You control Kintarō, a strong boy hero who wields a giant axe. Your goal is to explore the land, defeat yokai, and help the people you meet. The gameplay involves moving screen by screen, clearing enemies and obstacles with your axe; you can also pick up and throw rocks at foes. The pacing is brisk, and some sections demand careful timing to avoid damage. It feels satisfying to plow through enemies with such a weighty weapon.
