Game Overview

Master Karateka came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. It was part of that early wave of portable games where developers were still figuring out how to translate console experiences to a small, monochrome screen. You play as a martial artist on a quest to rescue your kidnapped master from a rival dojo.

You control your fighter through side scrolling stages, clearing each screen of enemies before moving to the next. The main objective is to fight your way to the final boss, using punches, kicks, and special moves that vary depending on the fighting style you choose at the start. The combat requires precise timing; mistiming a move leaves you open to counterattacks, and the enemies hit hard. It feels deliberate and a bit stiff, demanding patience rather than button mashing. Getting through a tough stage without taking a hit provides a real sense of accomplishment.
