Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow came out on Game Boy in 1996 from Disney Interactive. It was part of that wave of licensed platformers that tried to do something a little different, even on the small screen. You don't see many games where a famous duck becomes a detective who then turns into a ninja.
You control Donald Duck, or rather his alter ego Maui Mallard, as he investigates a curse on a tropical island. The main goal is to explore the island screen by screen, defeating enemies and solving environmental puzzles to progress. Your primary tools are a pogo jump for attacking from above and reaching high platforms, and the ability to transform into a shuriken-throwing ninja, Cold Shadow, to deal with specific enemies and obstacles. The pacing is deliberate, with some tricky platforming sections that demand precision. It feels like a solid, slightly oddball adventure that makes good use of the hardware.
