Play Mercenary Force Online

Hire a squad of Edo warriors with your starting cash, then shift formations mid-battle as demons pick off your team—corpses stay until you scrape together resurrection money or hire fresh recruits. Monks can warp you ahead if you're smart (or desperate) with your lineup.

Game Overview

Mercenary Force came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Kemco. It was one of those early portable titles that tried something a little different, a strategy RPG that didn't rely on a famous license or established series to find its audience. You had to pay attention to its systems; it wasn't a game that explained itself easily.

You control a party of up to four hired warriors, managing their funds and formations as you move screen by screen through monster-infested territory. The main goal is to fight your way to the final boss, but the real challenge is keeping your team alive and funded. Your key mechanics are hiring new units with limited starting gold and dynamically shifting your party's formation during combat to protect weaker members. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, because a single wrong move can get a valuable character killed, forcing you to either spend precious money on a resurrection or hire a cheaper, less experienced replacement. It feels like a constant, tense calculation of risk versus reward with every encounter.
