Game Overview

Mercs is one of those classic Amiga shooters that feels like Ikari Warriors cranked up a notch. You play as a counter-terrorism operative trying to rescue a kidnapped ex-president from some rebel forces—basically, run and gun through eight levels of jungle chaos.

The action mostly scrolls sideways, but you’ll quickly learn that just blasting enemies isn’t enough. Some trees and obstacles block your path, so you’ve gotta shoot your way through. And water? Forget shooting while you’re in it—positioning matters here. Sometimes you’ll steal enemy vehicles, which is a nice break from being on foot, and there are weapon upgrades and health pickups scattered around if you look carefully.

Each level ends with a massive boss fight—usually some armored vehicle that takes way too many bullets to bring down. It’s tough, but in that satisfying old-school way where every death feels like your fault. The kind of game where you’ll mutter “one more try” at 2 AM.
