Gates to Another World picks up right after the first Might and Magic, with Sheltem fleeing to the planet CRON—and of course, your party has to chase him down before he does something catastrophically stupid like hurling the world into its sun. The setup’s familiar if you played the first game: assemble six weirdos (elves, dwarves, even half-orcs this time), pick classes like Ninja or Barbarian (new!), and wander first-person dungeons while bashing monsters in turn-based fights.

What’s different? No more random encounters—enemies lurk in fixed spots now, though which ones show up is still a dice roll. Towns actually give you proper quests instead of just existing as pit stops, and there’s this whole time-travel thing where waiting too long ages your party (yes, they can die of old age). Also, you can hire two NPC tagalongs, which helps when someone inevitably gets paralyzed by a giant spider.

Oh, and skills matter way more now. Forget just swinging swords—someone needs to learn mountaineering to climb rocks, or cartography to stop getting lost every five minutes. It’s janky in that classic ’80s CRPG way, but if you liked the first game’s mix of exploration and spreadsheet-like strategy, this one cranks it up a notch. Just maybe don’t let your elf sorcerer retire before the final boss.
