Game Overview

Momotetsu Jr. is a Game Boy adaptation of the Momotetsu board game series, released in 1990 by Hudson Soft. It arrived early in the handheld's life, offering a digital version of a property well known in Japan for its train-themed economic competition. The game captures the look and feel of its console and tabletop predecessors, scaled down for portable play without losing the core premise.

You control a token moving around a board divided into Japanese regions, using dice rolls to travel and purchase train stations. The main goal is to bankrupt your opponents by charging them fees when they land on your properties or by triggering random events that drain their funds. Key mechanics include investing in stations to increase their value, drawing chance cards that can bring sudden windfalls or losses, and dealing with disruptive events like taxes or animal-related misfortunes. The pacing is brisk, with turns resolving quickly, but the difficulty spikes unpredictably due to heavy reliance on luck. It feels like a compact, frantic race where a few unlucky rolls can undo a half hour of cautious strategy.
