Game Overview

Morita Shougi Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by Success. It was one of the few dedicated shogi games available in English on the system, arriving at a time when handheld strategy titles were still pretty niche outside of Japan. You didn't get many options if you wanted a proper shogi game in your pocket back then; this was it.

You control the movement of traditional shogi pieces, aiming to capture your opponent's king. The game includes standard mechanics like piece promotion upon entering the enemy's territory and dropping captured pieces back onto the board as your own. Pacing is deliberate, demanding real concentration as you analyze the small grid, and the AI provides a stern challenge even on normal settings. It feels like a serious, no frills test of your tactical patience.
