Game Overview

Mr. Gono no Baken is a 1990 Game Boy release from developer/publisher Irem. It arrived during the handheld's early years, a time when developers were still exploring what kinds of adventures could fit in your pocket, often resulting in quirky, experimental titles that stood apart from more conventional fare.

You control a young boy exploring a surreal, haunted mansion, interacting with everything you see to solve its peculiar logic puzzles. The main goal is to simply survive the night and escape, which involves a lot of trial and error as you figure out what each strange object or character does. Signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration of the mansion's many rooms and a heavy emphasis on using items in unexpected ways on even more unexpected things. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a high difficulty born from its obscure, often nonsensical puzzles. It feels like wandering through someone else's bizarre dream, where every click is a step into the unknown.
