Game Overview

I picked up Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun on Game Boy back in 1990, a Technos Japan release that felt right at home among the portable brawlers of the era. It wasn't trying to be the biggest or the flashiest game on the system; it was just a solid, straightforward beat 'em up you could take anywhere. The screen was small, the action was loud, and it fit perfectly in that pocket of time when you needed something immediate and physical to play.

You control Kunio, a high school delinquent, as you move screen by screen through urban environments, clearing out rival gang members with punches, kicks, and grapples. Your main goal is to fight from one end of the city to the other, confronting bosses at key points. Signature mechanics include picking up and throwing enemies (or whatever objects are lying around), as well as executing spinning throws that send multiple thugs flying. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially when you're surrounded. It feels scrappy and a little messy in the best way possible, like a playground fight where every punch connects with a satisfying thud.
