Konami released Nemesis II: The Return for the Game Boy in 1991, a time when handheld shooters were often ambitious but constrained by the hardware. It was a direct sequel to the first Game Boy Nemesis, itself a portable adaptation of the Gradius series, and it tried to deliver a scaled-down version of that classic horizontal shooting action.
You pilot a spacecraft that scrolls automatically to the right, shooting down waves of alien enemies and dodging their patterned attacks. Your main goal is to survive through each stage and defeat the large boss waiting at the end. A key mechanic involves collecting power-up capsules that let you choose from different weapon upgrades, like spread shots or lasers, to tailor your firepower. Another is the iconic Options, or floating drones, that mirror your shots and can be positioned for strategic advantage.
