NHK Taiga Drama – Taiheiki on the Genesis does exactly that—swinging your sword has this weirdly satisfying weight to it, like you're cutting through actual armor instead of just tapping buttons. The first level throws you right into a night raid, torches flickering while enemy soldiers rush at you in waves. Mess up your timing, and you'll get swarmed fast.
What surprised me was how much the game leans into its historical drama roots. Between levels, you get these moody painted cutscenes straight out of the NHK show, all about Emperor Go-Daigo’s rebellion. The soundtrack’s full of shamisen and taiko drums too—way more atmospheric than your average '90s hack-and-slash. Just don’t expect an easy ride: some of those boss fights (looking at you, horseback general) will wreck you until you learn their patterns.
It’s basically Streets of Rage if it swapped street gangs for warring samurai clans. A total hidden gem if you’re into retro action with some historical flavor.
