Play NHL Hockey Online
Skate, pass, check, and score as you control a hockey team to outplay opponents in this fast-paced Sega Genesis classic from 1991.
NHL Hockey came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by EA Sports. It was one of the first hockey games on the system that really tried to capture the speed and physicality of the sport, and it stood out at the time for its smooth animation and team licensing. For a lot of us, it was the game that set the standard for what a console hockey title could be.
You control a team of five skaters and a goalie, working to outscore your opponent. The core gameplay involves passing, checking opponents into the boards, and taking slapshots that feel surprisingly powerful. Signature mechanics include the one-timer, setting up quick shots off a pass, and the ability to make brutal body checks that send players spinning. The pace is fast, almost frantic at times, and the difficulty can spike sharply against better teams. It feels raw and immediate, like you're right on the ice.
