Game Overview

Nobunaga no Yabou: Haouden came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Koei. It was part of that wave of strategy games that tried to bring complex, historically grounded simulations to consoles, a time when you’d often see deep, menu-heavy titles sitting right next to action platformers on the shelf.

You take control of a daimyo, one of several feudal lords vying to unify Japan. The game splits your time between turn-based strategic management of provinces and real-time tactical battles. On the campaign map, you raise armies, forge alliances, and manage resources like gold and rice. When armies clash, you direct individual units in real time, positioning archers, cavalry, and spearmen to exploit terrain and enemy weaknesses. The pacing is deliberate, demanding careful planning more than quick reflexes, and the difficulty can be steep as rival clans actively work against you. It feels like conducting a large, unpredictable war where every decision has weight.
