Game Overview

Nobunaga no Yabou – Haouden is one of those Sega Genesis games that makes you wonder why it wasn’t more famous. You start by picking a warlord—Nobunaga’s the obvious choice, but some of the smaller clans are way more interesting if you like a challenge—and then it’s off to conquer Japan, one province at a time.

The battles are real-time, which is rare for this series, and way more chaotic than the usual turn-based stuff. You’re constantly adjusting troop formations, watching enemy movements, and hoping your cavalry doesn’t get ambushed in the woods. Meanwhile, back at your castle, you’re juggling taxes, keeping your generals happy, and sometimes even marrying off family members to secure an alliance (which feels weird but hey, it’s the Sengoku period).

It’s got that classic 16-bit look, but don’t let the sprites fool you—this game’s brutal. Lose a key battle, and suddenly half your allies start eyeing your lands. Win too much, and everyone gangs up on you. I’ve spent way too many nights whispering “just one more province” before realizing it’s 3 AM.

If you like strategy games with actual consequences, this one’s worth digging up.
