Play Nobunaga's Ambition Online
Pick a warlord, scheme your way through shifting alliances, and pray your archers hold the high ground when rival armies come knocking. One wrong move and your whole clan could collapse before winter.

Nobunaga's Ambition for the Game Boy came out in 1993 from Koei, a company already known for its deep strategy games. On a system filled with platformers and puzzle games, this was a different kind of challenge, a complex political and military sim you could carry in your pocket. It felt ambitious just to try and run a province from that little screen.
You control a daimyo, a feudal lord, and your goal is to conquer all of Japan. The game plays out on a map divided into provinces, where you manage taxes, train troops, and forge fragile alliances that usually don't last. When diplomacy fails, you lead your armies into turn-based battles, positioning units like cavalry and archers on a grid to exploit terrain. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty is punishing; a poor harvest or a single lost battle can set you back months. It feels like a constant, tense balancing act between expansion and survival.
