Play Oriental Blue : Ao no Tengai Online
Pick between a swordsman or shrine maiden, then roam a mythic Japan where losing fights can twist the story in wild ways—boss wrecks you? Plot adapts. No dead-ends, just detours.

Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai is one of those GBA RPGs that flew under the radar but absolutely deserves more love. You pick between Tenran or Aoi—a fiery swordsman or a clever shrine maiden—and set off across this fantasy version of feudal Japan (with detours to Mongolia and China, because why not?). The whole "prove yourself to the legendary Fire Clan" thing sounds typical at first, but the way the story bends based on your choices—even when you lose fights—keeps it interesting.
What really hooked me was how open it feels. You can wander off the main path early and stumble into side quests that actually matter, or get wrecked by a boss and watch the plot twist into something completely different instead of just slapping a "game over" screen in your face. Combat’s classic first-person turn-based stuff, but with enough little tweaks to keep it from feeling stale. If you’ve ever wished a 16-bit RPG had more freedom, this one’s a hidden gem.
