Osomatsu-kun: Hachamecha Gekijou came out in 1988 for the Sega Mega Drive in Japan, developed by Sega. It was based on a classic anime, and it fit right in with the platform's early library of colorful, cartoonish games that tried to capture the energy of Saturday morning TV.
You control one of the six Matsuno brothers, punching and kicking through side-scrolling stages filled with oddball enemies and environmental hazards. The goal is simply to reach the end of each level, but you'll spend most of your time riding giant rolling Daruma dolls, bouncing off springboards, and even fighting your own siblings, who sometimes pop up as obstacles. The action is fast and a little messy, with unpredictable level designs that keep you on your toes. It feels like playing through a slapstick comedy episode where anything can happen.
