OutRun 2019 on the Genesis takes everything you loved about the original—the speed, the drifting, that feeling of barely staying in control—and throws it into a neon future. Your car hovers now, which sounds gimmicky, but it actually makes the tight corners way more satisfying to nail. The first time you hit a loop-de-loop and the screen flips upside down? Pure dumb fun.
The synth soundtrack is an absolute banger, all pulsing bass and laser-beam effects straight out of an '80s sci-fi flick. I kept catching myself humming the main theme hours after playing. And yeah, it’s not the sunny beaches of the original OutRun, but trading palm trees for glowing skyscrapers and warp tunnels gives it its own weird charm.
Fair warning: the speed takes some getting used to. You’ll wipe out a lot at first, but once it clicks, weaving through traffic at 300 mph feels like cheating physics. If you’ve got a Genesis collecting dust, this one’s worth digging out.
