Pat Riley Basketball came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Sega. You control a full team of five players, switching between them on the fly to play both offense and defense. The main goal is to outscore the computer or a friend by moving the ball down the court and finding good shots. Two mechanics stand out: the ability to call timeouts to manually adjust your defensive strategy, and the close-up one-on-one sequences that trigger when driving for a layup or dunk, where you have to rapidly press buttons to overpower the defender. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the computer AI can be punishing if you make sloppy passes.
