Play Pat Riley Basketball Online
Control your team in Pat Riley Basketball, outscore opponents, switch players on the fly, call timeouts, and battle for layups or dunks with quick button presses.
Pat Riley Basketball came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Sega. It was one of the earlier basketball games on the system, arriving before the NBA Jam era brought a more arcade style to the genre. This one tried to blend some simulation elements with the action, a common approach for sports titles at the time.
You control a full team of five players, switching between them on the fly to play both offense and defense. The main goal is to outscore the computer or a friend by moving the ball down the court and finding good shots. Two mechanics stand out: the ability to call timeouts to manually adjust your defensive strategy, and the close-up one-on-one sequences that trigger when driving for a layup or dunk, where you have to rapidly press buttons to overpower the defender. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the computer AI can be punishing if you make sloppy passes. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes frustrating test of your basketball IQ more than a pure arcade experience.
