Play Phantasm Online
Creepy little Metroid-like where you poke through shadowy corridors, get lost, then stumble on secrets that make the whole map snap into place. That eerie music loop haunts you long after you turn it off.
Phantasm was a Game Boy release from 1990, developed by Natsume. It arrived during a time when the handheld was filling up with ambitious, exploratory games that tried to do a lot with very little. You guide a small, robed figure through a sprawling, interconnected fortress that feels both ancient and malevolent. The screen-by-screen exploration is methodical, and the limited viewport makes every new room a small discovery, or sometimes an ambush.
You control a warrior armed with a sword, and your main goal is to find four elemental orbs to unlock the final confrontation. The combat is straightforward but deliberate; you thrust your blade forward, and timing is everything against the various spectral enemies that float into the frame. A key mechanic involves finding colored keys to open corresponding doors, which gradually opens up the labyrinth. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty comes from both the enemies and the maze-like layout that demands a good memory. It feels like carefully mapping a haunted house in your mind, one cautious step at a time.
