Phantasy Star IV still holds up as one of the best JRPGs on the Genesis. You start as Chaz, this rookie bounty hunter who gets dragged into way bigger problems than he signed up for—turns out saving the solar system wasn’t in his contract. The combat’s snappy with these cool combo attacks where party members team up for special moves, and the pixel art during battles looks fantastic even now.
This version fixes some nasty bugs (including that level 99 glitch that used to softlock your save). The story’s got that classic 90s anime vibe—weird bio-monsters, ancient civilizations, and a surprisingly emotional payoff if you’ve played the earlier games. Just don’t expect open-world exploration; it’s more about tight storytelling and turn-based fights with occasional vehicle sections to break things up.
If you’ve got nostalgia for 16-bit RPGs or just want to see where a lot of modern tropes started, this is still worth your time.
