Game Overview
Phantasy Star – Sennenki no Owari ni (or The End of the Millennium if you don’t feel like wrestling with Japanese) is one of those Genesis RPGs that somehow flew under the radar back in the day. You’ve got your ragtag crew—humans, aliens, even a sassy android—hopping between planets in the Algol system, trying to stop some ancient cosmic horror from wrecking everything. The pixel art still holds up, especially the eerie alien landscapes and those crunchy battle animations.
Combat’s turn-based but moves fast, and the soundtrack? Pure 16-bit sci-fi magic. Just don’t expect hand-holding—some of those dungeons are mazes straight out of a graph paper nightmare, and yeah, you’ll need to grind a bit. But if you ever wished Final Fantasy had more blasters and less chocobos, this is the retro fix you didn’t know you needed.
It’s a shame this one didn’t get the same love as the SNES RPG giants, because it absolutely deserves it.
