Play Pocket Sonar Online
Scan the ocean floor, locate sunken treasures, and manage your oxygen while dodging sea creatures in this deep sea salvage adventure on Game Boy.
Pocket Sonar came out for the Game Boy in 1998, published by Bandai. It was one of those late-era cartridges that tried something different with the hardware, a deep sea salvage game that felt a world apart from the usual platformers and RPGs crowding the system. You didn't save a princess or collect coins; you salvaged wreckage from the ocean floor, a quiet, tense premise that made the small screen feel vast and mysterious.
You control a salvage ship on the surface, methodically scanning the grid-based sea floor below with your sonar. The main objective is to locate and retrieve valuable cargo from sunken ships while managing your limited oxygen and avoiding aggressive sea creatures. Signature mechanics include interpreting the sonar's audio pings to pinpoint treasure locations and then carefully descending in a submersible to grab items before your air runs out or a hostile fish attacks. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative, until a sudden shark or squid appears and shatters the calm. It feels like a high-stakes game of hide and seek played in absolute silence, where every decision carries weight and a single mistake can erase minutes of careful progress.
