Ponymon Dawn is this weird little GBA romhack I stumbled across last week—it’s basically Pokémon but with ponies, and somehow it works? The pixel art’s surprisingly polished for an alpha, all bright meadows and chunky little horse monsters trotting around. My starter was this dopey-looking unicorn that shoots rainbows (of course), but then I found a shadowy nightmare pony in a cave and immediately ditched the rainbows for edgy vibes.
Battles play out like old-school turn-based RPGs, except instead of yelling "Thunderbolt!" you’re yelling "Sparkle Kick!" or whatever. The movesets are silly but weirdly balanced—my nightmare pony’s "Midnight Neigh" actually one-shot a gym leader’s tanky earth pony. There’s glitches (alpha life), but the dev’s clearly put love into it—little details like idle animations where your Ponymon nuzzle you or kick dirt impatiently.
If you’ve got a GBA emulator and 20 minutes to kill, it’s worth seeing how far the pony gimmick can go before you start taking it seriously.
