Power Monger on the Genesis is one of those weird, ambitious '90s strategy games that somehow works. You start with a tiny village and a handful of peasants who mostly ignore you—until you start conscripting them into your army or taxing them into poverty. The map's this grimy little isometric world where people actually go about their lives, chopping wood or just wandering around until you mess with them.
It's less about rigid turn-based moves and more about causing chaos in real time. Ally with one faction and their rivals immediately hate you; raise taxes too high and watch your own people revolt. I lost my first game because I didn't realize starving villagers will straight-up abandon your kingdom. The whole thing feels like a medieval sandbox where you're never fully in control, and that's what makes it weirdly gripping even now.
If you liked Populous but wished it had more petty betrayals and peasant rebellions, this is your game. Just don't expect the AI to play fair.
