Real Bout Special on the Game Boy is a portable adaptation of the Neo Geo fighting game, released by SNK. It arrived during a time when getting a respectable fighting game on the handheld was a notable event, even if it meant significant compromises from the arcade original. The game features a roster of familiar Fatal Fury characters, all rendered in the system's limited but functional visuals.
You control one of several fighters, like Terry Bogard or Mai Shiranui, and engage in one-on-one battles across different stages. The main objective is to deplete your opponent's health bar or knock them out of the ring. Key mechanics include the ability to sidestep between two planes to avoid attacks, and the presence of ring-out boundaries that instantly end a round if you're thrown past them. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially against the computer-controlled bosses. It feels like a condensed, scrappy version of a much bigger fight.
