Rebelstar: Tactical Command came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2005, developed by Codo Technologies and published by Namco. It arrived late in the GBA's life, a time when deep, thoughtful strategy games were still a welcome sight on the handheld. You take control of a small squad of soldiers fighting against an alien invasion, moving through grid-based maps in a series of turn-based encounters.
You direct each soldier individually, positioning them behind cover, flanking enemies, and using special abilities like healing or hacking. The main goal is to complete mission objectives, which often involve seizing control points or eliminating key targets. Two mechanics define the experience: action points govern everything you do, from moving to firing, and a percentage-based hit chance means positioning and elevation are critical. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is substantial, demanding careful planning each turn. It feels tense and rewarding when a well executed plan comes together.
