Risky Woods came out for the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Dinamic Software. It was one of those side-scrolling action games that felt right at home on the system, sitting alongside plenty of other fantasy adventures. The game didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it had its own particular flavor of challenge and style.
You control a warrior who moves screen by screen through monster-filled levels. Your main goal is to survive each area and defeat the boss waiting at the end. You start with a basic sword, but by collecting glowing orbs you temporarily gain more powerful projectile attacks, like fireballs or lightning. The catch is, getting hit makes you lose your current weapon and revert to the sword. The pacing is fast, the platforming demands precision, and enemies swarm constantly. It feels tense and unforgiving, a game where every small victory matters.
