Ristar is one of those weird, wonderful Genesis games that never got enough love. You play as this little stretchy-armed star dude trying to free a solar system from an intergalactic jerk named Greedy (subtle, right?). The whole thing kicks off when some desperate aliens beam a distress call to Ristar’s dad—except Greedy’s already kidnapped him. So guess who’s gotta clean up the mess?
The real fun’s in how Ristar moves. Instead of jumping on enemies like Mario, you grab them with your elastic arms and slam them headfirst into the ground. Feels way more satisfying than it should. You’ll also swing from trees, climb vines by pulling yourself hand-over-hand, and occasionally launch yourself like a slingshot. Each planet’s got its own vibe—one’s a jungle with bouncing mushrooms, another’s a frozen wasteland where you skate on ice. The music’s an absolute banger too, all chirpy and synth-heavy in that classic Genesis way.
It’s short, but every level’s packed with little secrets and creative gimmicks. Just don’t expect it to go easy on you—some of those boss fights get brutal.
