R-Type II is one of those arcade shooters that looks simple until you actually play it. You pilot this little ship that feels way too fragile against the screen-filling alien swarms, dodging bullet patterns while scrambling for power-ups. The first level tricks you into thinking you've got this—then suddenly you're getting sandwiched between two bosses.
It's got that classic MAME feel where every death stings, but you keep mashing the coin button anyway. The weapon upgrades are satisfying (that force pod is a lifesaver), and some of the enemy designs are just mean in the best way. If you miss arcade cabinets or just want to suffer gloriously, this one's still a blast.
