Play SaGa 2 : Hihou Densetsu Online
You pick a weird crew—mutants, monsters that evolve by eating enemies, maybe a cyborg—then stumble through bizarre floating islands and robot cities where battles punish you for playing it safe.

SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu came out on the Game Boy in 1991, developed and published by Square. It was part of that early wave of handheld RPGs, a time when you had to really lean into the screen to make out the details in the dim green glow. This was a sequel, but it felt like its own strange thing, a step away from the more traditional fantasy a lot of us were used to.
You control a party of characters you recruit, which can include humans, mutants, and monsters that evolve by literally consuming their foes. Your main goal is to gather the scattered pieces of a powerful artifact to prevent a catastrophe. The game plays out screen by screen, with random encounters leading to turn-based battles where your weapons can break and your stats grow in unpredictable spurts after fights. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is unapologetic, often leaving you to figure things out through trial and error. It feels like charting a map through a dream that’s equal parts fascinating and frustrating.
