Saint Sword came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that wave of action games that tried to capture the feel of arcade hack and slash adventures on home consoles, with big sprites and a lot of enemies crowding the screen.
You control the warrior Macress, moving through side scrolling and overhead areas to defeat demons and recover the pieces of the Saint Sword. Your main weapon is your blade, which you can swing in several directions, and you collect orbs that transform your arms into more powerful elemental weapons like fire or ice swords. The game is structured screen by screen, requiring you to clear enemies to proceed, and the pacing is fast but often brutally difficult due to the sheer number of foes and limited mobility. It feels like a relentless, claustrophobic scramble where every new power up offers a brief moment of overwhelming force before the next wave closes in.
