Play Salamander (version D) Online
Pilot your spacecraft, dodge alien attacks, collect power-ups, and blast through six stages in this classic arcade shooter.
I've been playing Salamander (version D) on MAME lately; it's a 1986 arcade shooter from Konami. It came out during a time when side scrolling shooters were really finding their footing, and this one feels like a direct, polished evolution of the Gradius formula. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it executes its ideas with a lot of confidence.
You pilot a small, versatile spacecraft through waves of alien forces. The main goal is simply survival, pushing through six distinct stages filled with intricate enemy patterns and environmental hazards. A signature mechanic is the seamless transition between horizontal and vertical scrolling segments within a single stage, which constantly changes your perspective and strategy. You collect power-up capsules to upgrade your ship's arsenal, including options (small orbiting drones), speed boosts, and a powerful laser, but losing a life strips you of these upgrades, creating a tense risk-reward dynamic. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is unforgiving, demanding precise dodging and smart weapon choices. It feels like a constant, exhilarating fight for control over the screen.
