Game Overview

SD Command Gundam: G-Arms came out for the original Game Boy, developed by Bandai. It was part of that wave of late 80s and early 90s portable games where developers tried to fit big ideas onto a small screen, often with mixed results. You got a Gundam game you could carry in your pocket, which was a pretty novel concept at the time, even if the hardware limited what it could do.

You control a small squad of SD Gundam units, moving them across grid-based maps in a turn-based strategy format. Your main goal is to complete mission objectives, which usually involve defeating all enemy mobile suits or reaching a specific point on the map. Signature mechanics include managing each unit's energy for movement and attacks, and using terrain for defensive cover. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, forcing you to think several moves ahead because a wrong step can leave a unit exposed and easily destroyed. It feels like playing a very compact, very serious game of chess, but with adorable, deadly robots.
