Sengoku 3 came out in 2001 for the Neo Geo, developed by SNK of America. It was a late release for the system, arriving when many players were already looking toward newer consoles, but it offered a polished take on the side-scrolling beat 'em up genre that the Neo Geo was known for.
You control one of four characters, each with distinct weapons and fighting styles, as you move through feudal Japan battling supernatural enemies. Your main goal is to advance screen by screen, clearing out waves of foes while occasionally facing larger boss encounters. The combat emphasizes combos and special moves, letting you chain attacks together or unleash screen-clearing techniques with careful timing. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can be punishing if you don't manage your health and positioning. It feels responsive and deliberate, with every slash and dodge carrying weight.
