Shadow of the Beast - Mashou no Okite is one of those Genesis games that sticks with you—mostly because it’s brutal, beautiful, and weird as hell. You play as Aarbron, this half-monster guy out for revenge, slashing through creepy forests and dark castles filled with things that look like they crawled out of a heavy metal album cover.
The Japanese version’s a bit kinder—not easy, just less likely to make you throw your controller—and the soundtrack’s this eerie synth wave that somehow makes everything feel even more unsettling. The animations are smooth, the backgrounds are packed with little details, and yeah, you’ll probably get lost a few times. But that’s part of the charm. If you’re into moody, old-school side-scrollers that don’t hold your hand, this one’s worth the frustration.
Just don’t say I didn’t warn you when some winged horror sends you back to the start.
