Shaman King: Legacy of the Spirits – Soaring Hawk is one of those GBA RPGs that feels like Pokémon but with way more ghosts and a samurai mentor who’s dead (but still helpful). You play as Yoh, a laid-back shaman who’d rather nap than save the world, but since some sketchy folks are gunning for godlike power, he’s gotta step up.
The battles are familiar—pick a spirit, fight, swap mid-battle if things go south—but the twist is merging spirits to unlock rare ones. Some combinations feel like trial and error at first, but stumbling into a powerful fusion is weirdly satisfying. There are over 1,000 spirits total, though a handful are exclusive to this version (Soaring Hawk) or its counterpart (Sprinting Wolf). Trading with friends helps fill the gaps, but good luck convincing someone to hand over their best spirit.
It’s got that early 2000s anime charm, right down to the pixelated sprites and dramatic showdowns. Just don’t expect Yoh to take any of it too seriously.
