Shikinjoh is one of those Genesis brawlers that somehow slipped under the radar, which is a shame because it’s basically Fist of the North Star cranked up to 11. You play as Kenshiro, the guy who makes people’s heads explode with a single finger jab—and yeah, the game lets you do that. The first time I triggered one of those finishers, I just sat there grinning like an idiot.
The combat feels weighty, like your punches actually hurt (which, given the source material, they should). It’s got that same addictive flow as Streets of Rage, but with way more dramatic pauses and enemies screaming “ATATATATA” before exploding into chunks. The pixel art nails the manga’s grimy, muscular style, and the soundtrack? Pure late-80s SEGA adrenaline. If you’ve ever wanted to punch a guy so hard his skeleton glows, this is your game.
Fair warning: it’s tough as nails, but in that satisfying arcade way where every loss feels like your fault. Definitely worth dusting off the Genesis for.
