I picked up Shrek: Swamp Kart Speedway for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when licensed kart racers were everywhere. It was developed by Vicarious Visions, who did a lot of solid GBA work, and it fit right in with the portable's library of quick, colorful games based on movies. You weren't expecting a revolution, just something fun to play between classes.
You choose from a small roster, including Shrek and Donkey, and race through tracks themed around locations from the film. The main goal is straightforward: finish first. You drift around corners to build a small speed boost and collect items like pumpkins to lob at other racers, which is the primary way to disrupt their momentum. The tracks are short and the AI can be aggressive, making some races surprisingly tense for such a simple game. It feels like a competent, if slightly slippery, distraction that captures the movie's humor in its visual gags.
