Play Sinistar Online
Pilot your ship, mine crystals from asteroids, fend off drones, and build bombs to take down Sinistar in this tense arcade shooter from 1982.
I first played Sinistar through MAME, the arcade emulator, which lets you run the original 1982 Williams Electronics code. It came out during the peak of arcade shooters, a time when games were built to devour quarters, and Sinistar was no exception. The visuals are simple by today's standards, but the audio design is what really set it apart.
You pilot a small, triangular ship in an open arena of space, mining red crystals from asteroids while fending off worker drones. Your goal is to gather enough crystals to build bombs, the only weapon that can damage the titular Sinistar. The signature mechanics are this tense resource gathering under constant threat and the eventual, frantic boss confrontation. The pacing is deliberately stressful; the longer you take, the more complete Sinistar becomes, and his digitized voice taunts you with threats like "Beware, I live!" and "I hunger!" It feels like a desperate race against a clock you can't see, culminating in a fight you're never quite ready for.
