Play Sorcerian (English) Online
You pick four oddball adventurers and tackle quests in any order—just don’t charge into that bat cave unprepared. Real-time combat’s janky but satisfying when your spells finally connect.

Sorcerian on the Genesis is one of those games I stumbled onto years ago and still think about. You start by picking four weirdos from a roster of classes—fighters, wizards, even merchants—and then just... dive into whatever quests grab you. No forced order, no hand-holding. First time I played, I accidentally took on a quest way above my party’s level and got demolished by a swarm of bats in some cave. Learned that lesson fast.
The combat’s real-time but clunky in that charming 16-bit way—your little sprites bump into enemies while spells go off like fireworks. And the quests? Some are straight-up brawls, others have you sneaking past traps or figuring out obscure puzzles. There’s this one where you escort a gnome through a minefield of falling rocks, and I swear it took me three tries to stop getting squashed.
It’s got that old-school difficulty where you’ll reload saves a lot, but the freedom makes up for it. If you’ve ever wished Ys had more party chaos or wanted a Genesis RPG that doesn’t play it safe, this is your jam. Just maybe keep a walkthrough handy for the weirder quests.
