Action-educational shooter with five levels. Collect letters mid-action to spell target words while dodging obstacles and shooting enemies. Features vehicles like helicopters and submarines. Released in 1991 for Amiga.
Game Overview
Spellbound! is one of those weird, charming Amiga games that somehow turns spelling practice into an arcade shooter. You play as Hal, Henrietta’s American cousin (yeah, that Henrietta), trying to recover a magic wand from a mad scientist named Professor Grime. The setup’s bizarre, but it works—you’re dodging bullets in a helicopter one minute, piloting a submarine the next, all while collecting letters to spell out words.
The levels are short but frantic—you’ve got enemies shooting at you, obstacles to weave through, and these floating letters you need to grab in the right order. Mess up the sequence, and you’re stuck until you find the correct one. The graphics are bright and cartoony, and there’s even some voice acting, which was pretty fancy for an educational game back then. It’s not deep, but it’s way more fun than memorizing word lists.
Honestly, I’d forget I was learning half the time—just trying not to crash into walls or get shot kept me busy enough. If you ever played any of the Henrietta games, this one’s a fun little spin-off. If not, it’s still a weirdly entertaining way to kill half an hour.
